Cape Town summers are hot and dry, and water is precious. A water-wise garden stays green while using less water.

The Western Cape has faced serious droughts before, and every household and business can help by using water more carefully. The good news is that a water-wise garden is also easier and cheaper to look after.

1. Water early or late

Water before 9 in the morning or after 6 in the evening so less water is lost to the sun and wind. Evening watering also gives roots the whole night to soak up moisture before the heat of the next day.

2. Use mulch

A thick layer of mulch keeps soil cool and moist and stops weeds from growing. Bark chips, compost and even dry leaves all work well as mulch and slowly feed the soil as they break down.

3. Choose indigenous plants

Fynbos, succulents and other local plants are made for our climate and need far less water. Once they are established, many indigenous plants can survive on rainfall alone for much of the year.

4. Group plants by water needs

Keep thirsty plants together so you do not overwater the hardy ones. This also makes it easier to set irrigation zones so each part of the garden gets the right amount.

5. Check for leaks

A leaking tap or broken irrigation pipe can waste a lot of water without anyone noticing. Walk around the garden once a month and look for wet patches or water running onto paving.

6. Follow the current water rules

Check the City of Cape Town's latest water guidelines before setting watering times. Rules can change with dam levels, so it is worth checking a few times a year.
