Not all security companies offer the same level of service. Ask these questions before you sign a contract.
Choosing the wrong company can leave your premises exposed and your staff at risk. Taking a little time to ask the right questions at the start can save you a lot of trouble later.
1. Are they PSIRA registered?
Every security company and guard in South Africa must be registered with PSIRA. Ask for the number and check it. Using an unregistered company is illegal and leaves you with no protection if something goes wrong.
2. Are guards trained for your type of site?
A shopping centre, a warehouse and a residential complex each need different skills. A guard who understands your site will know where the risks are and what to watch for.
3. Who supervises the guards?
Ask how often supervisors visit the site and how they check that guards are alert. Regular supervision keeps standards high and makes sure guards are where they should be.
4. How are incidents reported?
You should receive clear reports, not just a phone call after something has gone wrong. Ask to see a sample incident report so you know what you will receive.
5. Is the price realistic?
A price far below the market often means underpaid or untrained guards. Compare full written quotes. Make sure the quote shows how many guards, how many hours and what is included.
6. Can they give references?
Speak to current clients about reliability and response times. A company that is proud of its work will be happy to put you in touch with existing clients.
