A neat lawn makes the whole property look cared for, whether it is a family home, an office park or a complex. In summer, getting the timing and height right makes a big difference to how green the grass stays.

1. Mow about once a week

In peak summer most Cape Town lawns need weekly mowing. Slow-growing lawns can go two weeks. Regular mowing helps the grass grow thicker, which also crowds out weeds.

2. Do not cut too short

Never remove more than a third of the grass height at once. Short grass burns and dries out quickly. Longer grass shades its own roots and holds moisture in the soil for longer.

3. Keep blades sharp

Blunt blades tear the grass and leave brown, ragged tips. Have mower blades sharpened at the start of every season, or more often if you mow a large area.

4. Mow when the grass is dry

Wet grass clumps and gives an uneven cut. Mowing in the early evening, when the dew has gone, usually gives the best result.

5. Leave clippings sometimes

Short clippings break down and feed the lawn naturally. Only leave clippings if they are short; long clumps can smother the grass underneath.

6. Edge the borders

Neat edges along paths and beds make the whole garden look cared for. Edging takes only a few minutes but makes a freshly mown lawn look professional.
