Cape Town summers are hot, dry and often very windy. Spring is the best time to get your garden ready, so it stays green and healthy when the heat arrives.
1. Clean up after winter
Remove dead leaves, broken branches and weeds. This gives plants room to grow and removes places where pests hide.
2. Prune and cut back
Trim shrubs and hedges into shape and cut back overgrown trees, especially branches close to the house, walls or power lines.
3. Feed the soil
Dig compost into your beds to help the soil hold water and give plants the nutrients they need for the growing season.
4. Mulch to save water
A layer of mulch, such as bark or wood chips, around plants keeps the soil cool and reduces how quickly water evaporates in the heat and wind.
5. Water wisely
Water early in the morning or in the evening, when less water is lost to the sun and wind. Always follow the City of Cape Town's current water rules.
6. Choose hardy plants
Water-wise and indigenous plants usually cope far better with Cape Town's dry summers than thirsty exotic plants.
