In South Africa, every security business and every security officer must be registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA). Hiring an unregistered company can put your property, and even you, at risk.
Why PSIRA registration matters
- It is the law: security providers must be registered to operate legally.
- Minimum training standards: registered officers have completed recognised security training.
- Accountability: PSIRA can act against registered companies that break the rules.
What to ask for
- Ask for the company's PSIRA registration number and write it down.
- Ask whether the officers who will work on your property are registered, and whether they carry their PSIRA identity cards on duty.
- Check the details with PSIRA directly. You can find PSIRA's contact details on its official website.
- Be careful with prices that are far below everyone else. Very cheap quotes can mean unregistered staff or corners being cut.
