Weeds grow fast in Cape Town's spring and summer, especially after rain. Many people reach for weed killer, but there are simpler and safer ways to keep beds and paving clean, especially if children and pets use the garden.

1. Pull weeds when the soil is moist

Roots come out more easily after rain or watering. Use a hand fork to loosen the soil so you remove the whole root.

2. Get them before they seed

One weed left to seed can produce hundreds more. Removing flowers and seed heads early saves hours of work later in the season.

3. Mulch your beds

A good layer of mulch blocks light and stops many weeds growing. Mulch also keeps moisture in the soil, which helps your plants.

4. Plant closely

Dense planting leaves less space for weeds. Ground covers are a good way to fill gaps between larger plants.

5. Use boiling water on paving

Boiling water kills weeds in cracks between pavers. Be careful near plants you want to keep, as boiling water will kill them too.

6. Weed a little every week

Small regular sessions are easier than one big job. A regular gardening service makes sure the job never builds up.
