Knowing exactly who comes onto your property is one of the simplest and strongest security measures.
A busy gate can see dozens of people pass through every day: residents, staff, cleaners, contractors and deliveries. Without proper access control it becomes easy for someone with bad intentions to blend in.
1. Stop strangers at the gate
A guard who checks every visitor makes it much harder for criminals to walk in. The guard should stay polite but firm, even when visitors are in a hurry.
2. Record names, times and reasons
If something goes missing, the visitor log shows who was on site. Accurate logs are also useful for resolving disputes and for insurance claims.
3. Check contractors too
Contractors and delivery drivers should be logged like any other visitor. Many thefts are linked to people who were allowed onto the property for work.
4. Confirm with the resident or tenant
The guard should call ahead before letting someone in. This simple step stops people from using a resident's name to get through the gate.
5. Issue and collect visitor tags
Tags make it easy to spot someone who should not be there. Tags must be collected when visitors leave so they cannot be reused.
6. Keep records safe
Logs should be stored securely and handled under POPIA rules. Only authorised people should be able to view the visitor records.
