Spring is the best time to clear out winter damp and dust before the summer heat arrives. Use this checklist room by room.
After months of closed windows and rainy days, most homes need more than the usual weekly clean. Working through the house one room at a time makes the job manageable and makes sure nothing is forgotten.
1. Wash curtains and blinds
Winter damp and dust collect in fabric. Wash or vacuum curtains and wipe each blind slat. Clean curtains and blinds also help people with allergies, because they hold a surprising amount of dust.
2. Check for mould
Look behind cupboards, in bathrooms and around window frames. Clean mould early before it spreads. Use a mould remover or a mix of water and vinegar, wear gloves, and keep the room well ventilated while you work.
3. Clean windows inside and out
Clean windows let in more light and make the whole house feel brighter. Do not forget the tracks and frames, where sand and dead insects build up over winter.
4. Deep clean the kitchen
Empty the fridge, clean the oven, degrease the extractor fan and wipe inside the cupboards. Throw away expired food and wipe down shelves before restocking, so the kitchen starts summer fresh.
5. Wash bedding and mattresses
Wash duvets and pillows, then vacuum and air the mattresses in the sun. Cape Town spring sunshine is a free way to freshen up bedding and kill dust mites.
6. Clear out clutter
Donate what you no longer use. Less clutter means less dust and faster cleaning all year. Start with one cupboard or drawer at a time so the job does not feel overwhelming.
